New Exhibitions: Amity and Members Photography

The "Amity" group, including Carol Clue, Dianne Vagg, Philip Bolding, Colleen Gates, and Dorothy Beverley, are using two rooms at the gallery to display their work, ranging from still life pieces to watercolour landscapes and beautiful floral works.

The remaining two rooms at the gallery have a wonderful display of members photograhy ranging from portraits to nature, wildlife and landscapes. This exhibition closes on April 18th, 2010.

This month's exhibitions at the Gawler Community Gallery feature mixed media artist Yvonne Jaunay, photographer, Cynthia Jones, contemporary portrait and still life painter, Suzzanne Elborough and Aboriginal artist, Margaret Farrugia.

Their exhibitions include some very colourful portraits, abstract pieces, indigenous art, and a room full of photography called "Double Trouble", which, as the title suggests, means that all photographs have two subjects included. Most of the pieces come from nature, with flora and fauna in beautiful scenes. Photographer, Cynthia Jones, has you guessing in one photograph, but yes, there are two "hard to find" objects.

All four artists have a gallery room to themselves. The entire collection of artworks is so varied that you're bound to find something that you'll want to take home with you (don't forget to inquire with our volunteers on duty if you are interested in making a purchase).

The official opening of the exhibition was held on Sunday 14th February. Judy Gillett-Ferguson, President of the Gawler Community Gallery Board of Management spoke warmly of the four separate exhibitors and how much they enhance the Gallery by their variety and skillfully produced work.

Harpist Kay Deeholtz from Hamley Bridge set up her beautiful harp and played through the afternoon to many enthralled guests.

All four exhibitions on on display until March 14th, 2010.

Our New Web Site and Member's Photographic Exhibition

Welcome to our completely revised and revamped web site. Hopefully the new look as well as all the useful information will be of benefit to anyone who has an interest in the Gawler Community Gallery.

Please take a moment to fully explore the site. There's a complete new page describing the history of the gallery along with information about the gallery committee as well many important documents available for download.

Of particular interest is the up coming members photographic exhibition. Entries for this close on March 7th 2010 so if you are a member of the gallery and would like to enter your photograph then be sure to download, print and return your entry form as soon as possible.

Presently the galleries web site is looking pretty bare in the way of show casing the work of our local artists. If you've exhibited work at the gallery in the past and you have a really great snap shot of your art in the gallery then we'd love to use it on the site some where.

Second Members Exhibition for February 2009

Happy New Year! Hope everyone had a great Christmas too.

The Gawler Community Gallery Committee is aware that due to administrative difficulties and other technical problems that many members did not receive enough notice (if any at all) to exhibit in the December 2008 – February 2009 members exhibition.

Whilst this is again short notice the Committee is pleased to offer members another chance to exhibit their works in the Galleries upstairs exhibition rooms from February 12th to March 15th 2009.

Each artwork to be exhibited will be charged a $3.00 entry fee with a maximum of FOUR artworks per artist. Entry forms and fees must be returned by February 1st 2009.

Members who have artworks in the current members exhibition can, if they wish, simply carry these works over into the new members exhibition however entry fees will still apply and you must submit your entry form regardless (tick the space provided on the form if you are carrying works over so we know we have them at the gallery already).

Whilst we are happy to carry works over from the previous exhibition we highly recommend submitting new or different works to facilitate a fresh exhibition for our regular visitors and to maximize your sales opportunities.

For your convenience artworks can be delivered to the gallery on Sunday February 8, between 4-6pm – at the same time works from the current members exhibition are to be collected.

Gawler Community Gallery A.G.M. 2008

Following a daunting but delicious main course at the Prince Albert Hotel, Committee members were elected for the next twelve months.

On behalf of the members, the president thanked those members who are no longer serving. Carol Clue, Marilyn Tucker, Sandra Sullivan, and Shirley Shaw have given a great deal to the Gallery during the consolidating years, and we deeply appreciate their enormous contribution.

Judy stressed the need for change and growth in the Gallery. She believes that the enthusiasm and ideas contributed by a changing committee is important. As this will be her last year as president, Judy has asked members to begin considering their willingness to nominate for office at next year’s A.G.M.

Opening of Gawler Art Award

Sunday 5th October saw almost a hundred people attend the opening of the Biennial Art Award at the Gawler Community Gallery.

Several of the winners for the Categories were present to receive there awards and prizes.

Gerhard Ritter was judged the overall winner of the $1500 Acquisition Prize donated by the Town of Gawler with his painting called "Silk Road" a portrait of a Moroccan merchant.

Lorraine Winchester won best watercolour with her painting of coloured corn. Joanne Hughes was the winner of the Textile Art Award with her "Bush Camp at Dawn, Heidi Poole won a Junior Prize for her "Fruity" a painted real shoe.

Maxine Donald was the winner of a new category "Depiction of Sports/Recreation" with her painting of "Toasting Jack" coincidentally a picture of the local Bunyip Newspaper and Jack Bobridge after his win of the Tour Down Under, cycling Race. This prize had been donated by the Bunyip Newspapers, unbeknown to the judges of course.

The Exhibition will be on show at the Gallery until Sunday November 2nd, and is well worth a visit. The variety of entries pleased the four judges, although it made for lots of discussion and consultation before decisions could be made.
