Elise Eiffe

Elise is an up and coming local artist exhibiting a range of artworks in her first solo show. Many works in different mediums are portraits created in her own unique style. Her exhibition is in the upstairs blue room at the gallery and is on display from March 3rd to April 6th 2011.

Connecting Weave, Threads and Culture Eco Art Exhibition 2011

Connecting Weave, Threads, and Culture Eco Art Exhibition is presented by Ngarrindjeri Eco Art Co-Op from Camp Coorong, Meningie. Ngarrindjeri Eco Art Co-Op (NEAC) is co - founded by Ngarrindjeri Land and Progress Association (NLPA) and Innovative Art in Textiles (IAT) and is run collaboratively by multi –disciplinary emerging visual artists and Ngarrindjeri Cultural Weavers from the Coorong and surrounding districts. NEAC is endeavoring to implement an artist run initiative where active members are responsible for the running of its creative endeavor and sustaining its community art projects. These projects are designed to bring hope, increase community participation, prosperity and new revenue possibilities. This is also designed to help connect the Ngarrindjeri community to the wider community and making the connection through artistic practices.

This exhibition showcases a range of contemporary pieces of Ngarrindjeri weaving and traditional basket weaving, wearable art costumes, up-cycle neck tie dresses and trendy eco bags made from 100% recycled neck ties. There is also a wide selection of affordable chic and stylish glass beads and felted earrings, felted necklaces, vibrant silk and velvet scarves, handmade paper, framed textile and metal artworks. Sixty five percent of the art on display is designed and created using sustainable materials, proving fashion and sustainable living can co-exist.


About Ngarrindjeri Eco Arts Co – Op

Ngarrindjeri Eco Art Co-Op (NEAC) is co-founded by Ngarrindjeri Land & Progress Association (NLPA) and Innovative Art in Textiles (IAT) and is run collaboratively by multi-disciplinary emerging visual artists and Ngarrindjeri Cultural Weavers from the Coorong and surrounding areas. NEAC is endeavor to implement an artist run –initiatives where active members are responsible for the running of its creative endeavour and sustaining its community art projects, and employ a responsive focus group to develop, facilitate and implement sustainable community eco - arts projects designed to bring hope, increase community participation, prosperity and new revenue possibilities to desperately disempowered Ngarrindjeri members of the community in the Coorong district in South Australia. NEAC will also endeavor to encourage and welcome Non- Indigenous artist to join and the wider community to connect through art.

Gawler Gallery Christmas Party - Date Correction!

Although most people should have been alerted to the correct date of the Gawler Galleries end of year Christmas Party via the December Roster mail out it's come to my attention that the galleries last couple of newsletters had the incorrect date published.

The correct date is today, WEDNESDAY, 15th December 2010. Not the 16th as printed in our newsletter.

The time and place are still the same: 6:30pm at the Willaston Hotel in the Alfresco Room.

Apologies to anyone who may have been inconvenienced by the incorrect date. Clearly the committee needs to double check important dates before the newsletter goes out.

New Gallery Management Committee Elected for 2011

The Gawler Community Galleries 2011 management committee was elected at the November AGM held at The Price Albert Hotel in Gawler on the 17th November 2010.

Outgoing President, Judy Ferguson, paid tribute to former 2010 committee member Shirley Shaw who recently passed away after a long battle with cancer. Shirley was mentioned in several other committee member's reports highlighting that her work for the gallery and her exhibitions of  latest artworks will be missed greatly.

Out new management committee for 2011 is as follows:

Finding people with the time to be on our management committee is a difficult task. Thanks to all the continuing committee members and a special thank you to those new committee members stepping up for the first time.

Finally a big thank you to our former president Judy Ferguson, who no doubt would have renominated for President had her constitutional five year limit on the committee had not been reached.

Judy has been President of the gallery since before its establishment in February 2006 and was President of ArtsAction (the group formed in 2000 to lobby for the establishment of a community gallery in Gawler) up until the gallery was established. Effectively Judy has been a leading driver of Community Arts in Gawler for ten years straight.

Only Judy would take a break from the committee by taking on the task of Roster Co-ordinator - one of the most difficult gallery management jobs - as an unofficial position.

Exhibitions at the Gallery October - November

Currently on display at the Gawler Gallery are three exhibitions all of which run from October 14 to November 14 2010.

The exhibition will showcase a composite of works from the imaginary and real, the sadness, sensuality and vitality of life, to the compositional exploration of the everyday world around us by three different but complementary artists.

Kerrie Barrett

Kerrie is a self taught artist working mainly in oils and is represented in private and corporate collections in Australia and overseas. She was a founding member of the Blackwater Art Gallery and has exhibited in group and solo exhibitions in three states. Kerrie’s landscapes are both real and imaginary. Most are sketched or rough painted on site and finished in her studio.

Naomi Falting

Naomi has engaged with art since embracing it at secondary school. With TAFE studies in sculpture, painting, drawing and printmaking, and private tuition in watercolour, she explores personal dimensions of expression. Naomi favours working in acrylics, charcoal and conte. Her art has been sporadically intermingled with family, community and full time work.

Peter Murdoch

From his earliest training as an art teacher to his current work in web and publication design Peter has never lost the desire to explore his own individual view of the world. He has exhibited in recent years, at Belalie Art Gallery in Jamestown and at the University of Adelaide, and in 2009 was a finalist in the Prospect Portrait Prize. His work includes painting, drawing and photography.


Downstairs Green Room:

“ON THE WAY”

By the Artistic Quartet.

This is a diverse exhibition of painted works by four artists including Ron Brook and Bob McCance, taking their collective steps towards a brighter future. An artist will be ‘in residence’ and painting each day during this exhibition.

People's Choice Winner, 2010 Gawler Art Award

Bonnie Supple (pictured on the left) is presented with the 5th Gawler Art Award, People's Choice Award for her work 'Highland Cow' by the Galleries Publicity Officer, Joanne Hughes. Bonnie's artwork also won the Youth 10-14 years category of the Awards.

Winners of the 5th Gawler Art Award 2010

The official opening and award announcements of the 5th Gawler Art Award were a great success with many people commenting on the excellent variety and quality of the 118 works on display with particular mention of how well the exhibition was hung (thanks to my small but very dedicated team who spent a day and a half hanging all the works).

The winners were as follows:

• Best Nature/Flora Theme - Melissa Farrell, Purple Peacock (Mixed Media)
   
• Best Watercolour - Gerhard Ritter, Here to Serve (Watercolour)
   
• Best Sport/Recreation Theme - Ellen Steyn, Demise of SA 3 Day Event? (Acrylic)
   
• Best Gawler Theme - Maxine Donald, Church Hill Chimneys (and Owl), Gawler (Watercolour)
   
• Best Open Theme - Norah Jones, Beach Dancing (Pastels)
   
• Best Hanging Textile - Carol Clue, Late Summer Glow (Textiles)
   
• Best 3D Original Art - Kimberley Hargrave, Rainbow Lace Breastplate (Crystal & wire)
   
• Best Youth 10-14 years - Bonnie Supple, Highland Cow (Charcoal)
   
• Best Youth 15-18 years - Hannah Stockdale, Laura (graphite)

Each category also had certificates given to at least one work that was considered highly regarded by the judges. All the winners and highly regarded entries are acknowledged in the photo accompanying article below by The Bunyip Newspaper (click to see the full size version).

The exhibition closes this Sunday the 10th October at 4pm. If you haven't seen it then do yourself a favour and get down to the gallery. All works are for sale... why not purchase a prize winning work of art?
